CHESTERFIELD CATENIANS

The Chesterfield Circle of the Catenian Association has 38 members. It welcomes new members, who are soon made to feel at home.

We meet and dine once a month, usually at the SMH Stadium on Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. We offer a varied programme of activities and events to suit all tastes, such as outings, monthly pub lunches, country walks, weekends away and special Masses (usually followed by a pub meal!). Most of the social events are open to members’ wives and to their widows, who often remain fully involved.

The Association was set up over 100 years ago as a Catholic men’s organisation for people with a business or professional background. Nowadays, we welcome any practising Catholic laymen who enjoy mixing with Catholic men from a wide range of backgrounds.

‘Catena’ is the Latin word for ‘Chain’, as exemplified by the logo above, which represents that each Circle is linked with every other Circle through Catholic friendship. Members are encouraged to visit other Circles so that they get to know fellow Catenians elsewhere. They know that if they move to live or work in another part of the UK, they can visit and/or join another Circle nearby. Chesterfield Circle is one of a dozen Circles which meet regularly within the East Midlands Province and there are similar groupings throughout the UK.

The Catenian Association (‘Strengthening family life through friendship and faith’) has about 8,000 members in Circles in England, Australia, Ireland, Malta, Southern Africa, India, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Nazareth. It holds provincial, national and international events and holiday pilgrimages, and actively supports the Catholic Church and the wider community.

Although the Catenian Association is primarily a social one, it does a lot of good work for others, especially for young people. The Catenian Bursary Fund supports them when they help on Lourdes Pilgrimages and when they volunteer on missions in overseas countries. Within their Provinces, the Catenians also organise public speaking competitions for young people. The Catenian Association is very involved with ‘flame’. Each Circle raises considerable funds for its own President’s Charity.

A very readable monthly magazine, Catena, keeps everyone informed of events and opportunities throughout the Association. You can request a free copy from the website below.

Should you be interested in joining the Catenians, you will be invited to meet us over a meal and to attend a Circle meeting before deciding if the Association is right for you.
